Halloumi Curry


If you are looking for a filling vegetarian meal that the whole family can enjoy, look no further than this Halloumi Curry. Halloumi here takes the place of traditional paneer, which you can get at supermarkets but it is not always readily available. This might be one of my favourite easy recipes. It takes 40 minutes but only 20 minutes of attention as for half the time it is simmering away. I urge you to try this out and hope it will become a regular in your kitchen as it is in mine.

This Halloumi Curry is truly a people pleaser. I do say this serves 4 people I will admit these are not massive portions, as I really enjoy eating with rice and nann. If you are not ‘double carb-ing’ then I say it will serve 3 well. This isn’t an extremely hot curry, you can, of course, make it hotter if you wish. But the heat of this recipe is one that can be enjoyed by all.

Sometimes, I feel, vegetarian recipes try and distract you from the fact there is no meat rather than celebrating the ingredients used. This is not the case hear you can taste halloumi and tomatoes and all of the spices, working together to sing songs over you palate. Vegetarian meals can be vibrant, filling and comforting. This Halloumi Curry is all of these things and more.

I particularly like recipes, such as this one, that I can leave to have a moment away. For I would much rather a dish took 40 minutes to make with 20 minutes of time alone than a frantic 15 minutes juggling 4 pans, the oven and a toaster. This feels easy and calm, a matter of stirring things together in order and then letting bubble together.

Halloumi Curry

A quick, simple, vegetarian curry that is filling and will please the whole family

  • 250 grams Halloumi
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 1 inch Fresh Garlic
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Puree
  • 0.5 tsp Ground Turmeric
  • 0.5 tsp Ground Coriander
  • 0.5 tsp Chilli Flakes
  • 0.5 tsp Cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp Crushed Black Peppercorns
  • 0.25 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1 tin Chopped Tomatoes
  • 100 ml Water
  • 2 tbsp Mango Chutney
  • Fresh Coriander leaves (to serve)
  1. Cut your block of Halloumi into cubes roughly 1-2cm.

    Finely dice your Onion and grate your Garlic and Ginger

  2. Heat a dry frying pan over a medium heat and tip in the cubes of Halloumi, allow to them to get golden brown, turning occasionally.

  3. In a medium saucepan heat 1 tbsp Olive Oil and tip in the chopped Onion and allow to soften for about 3 minutes.

    Next tip in the Garilc and Ginger and cook for 1 minute stirring constantly. Followed by the Tomato Puree cook for a further minute stirring continuously.

  4. Now at the Spice – Add the Ground Turmeric, Ground Coriander, Chilli Flakes, Cinnamon, Crushed Black Peppercorns, Chilli Powder and stir and cook for approx. 2 minutes until the spices are fragrant.

  5. Now add the Chopped Tomatoes and swill the tin out with the 100ml of water and stor together. Add the Mango Chutney and stir.

    Let the curry come to a bubble and then turn down to a simmer.

    Simmer for 20 minutes.

  6. Serve with Scattered with Fresh Coriander leaves, Rice & Nann and enjoy!

Leftovers Tip 

This curry is delicious and if you use it as a filling for a halloumi curry pastie. Take it on a picnic. Or top with pastry for a curry pie! So many ways to use this.
