Cinnamon Sugar Churro Chips

Jump to Recipe

I have a sweet tooth and particularly love churros. Well what can be bad about fried dough tossed with cinnamon sugar? I came up with these sweet chips one evening when there wasn’t much in the house and my fiancée and I were craving a sweet treat. So I give you Cinnamon Sugar Churro Chips.

The Norwegians have a snack called Lefse. This is a soft flatbread made from flour, potatoes, butter and milk or cream, this is cooked on a flat griddle. There are many flavourings or toppings for the Lefse one is cinnamon and sugar. Of course this served as a sort of inspiration. However I wanted more texture than soft flatbread and so I decided to bake it in chip form. This has since become my get out of dessert jail card. I can whip these up and everyone is happy. They are perfect for unexpected guests and have the kitchen smelling of cinnamon. Whilst I appreciate it is August at the time of writing, these would be perfect for the festive season when you do have people turn up last minute.

The work of a mere smear of oil, a dusting of sugar and slicing before baking for 10 minutes, perfect fuss-free food. I advise you allow these a bit of time to cool before snacking as the sugar will be hot and you want to be able to taste these. My Sweet Cream Cheese Dip helps cool them down somewhat for those especially impatient (myself included).

I find cinnamon can easily tip over the edge and over power many other ingredients that have a quieter voice. The sugar tempers the cinnamons volume and I suggest tasting the cinnamon sugar mix before covering the wrap. I do suggest you use white wraps for these. I have tried with wholemeal and the chips don’t crisp quite as much and I find the depth of the wholemeal fights with the cinnamon slightly for dominance. However if you only have wholemeal wraps they will most certainly please your palette.

I find having a sweet chips and dip at a party is a fun surprise. Guests often comment on the novelty of having a savoury and a sweet version. The choice is yours if you wish to announce what it is or whether you keep schtum and delight in the shock factor. Pair these Cinnamon Sugar Churro Chips with my sweet cream cheese dip for maximum pleasure.
