From The Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom
Ever wondered what you get if you marry french toast and a doughnut? If you have ever had breakfast at The Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom then you know what I’m talking about. The Puffed French Toast is always on my list of must have. Gloriously soft with a sugary exterior and of course I then drench it in syrup – after all calories don’t count when your on vacation right?
So of course I want to recreate this dish at home and I’m sure you do as well. The basic premise is you make a batter and dunk bread in the batter then fry. I use a pancake batter to make this scrumptious treat and let me tell you do not hold off when dunking. The more batter that is on your bread the more they puff up. This batter is simple to make and this recipe makes plenty I’d say about 10 servings.

If you are thinking I don’t need 10 portions of Puffed French Toast. 1. You are incorrect of course you do and 2. You can FREEZE it! Yes you read that correct these piece of cooked puffed french toast can hang out in your freezer. When you want to have them thaw them and reheat either in the oven or a dry frying pan. This saves time if you want them for a lazy breakfast or even a dessert.

This is the perfect brunch recipe it doesn’t take too long and it really tastes so good. and its so simple.
• Slice the bread into triangles.
• Mix up the batter.
• Heat the oil.
• Dunk the bread.
• Fry until golden and puffed.
• Drain and toss in cinnamon sugar.
I love to travel and I love eating whilst I travel. Whatever food I eat is intrinsically linked to my memories of the trip. Recreating the dishes in my kitchen definitely takes me straight back to the moment I discovered them. That is exactly what this puffed french toast does transports me to a happy magical place having breakfast with Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. Whilst I can’t wait to be back with them making Pooh’s Puffed French Toast definitely makes me less ‘rumbly in my tummy.’

Puffed French Toast
The iconic Disney World treat from breakfast with Winnie the Pooh and friends at The Crystal Palace
Cinnamon Sugar
- 150 grams Granulated or Caster Sugar
- 2 tsp Cinnamon
Batter
- 1 Egg
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 15 grams Caster Sugar ((1 tbsp + 1 tsp))
- 250 ml Milk (I use oat milk)
- 180 grams Plain Flour (All Purpose)
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 0.25 tsp Salt
Bread & Oil
- 5 Thick Slices of White Bread
- Oil for frying (I use vegetable oil)
Firstly make the Cinnamon Sugar.
Mix the Sugar and Cinnamon in a dish and set aside.
Prep the Bread.
Slice the bread into triangles and set aside.
Mix up the batter.
Put the Caster Sugar, Egg, Vanilla Extract in a large bowl and whisk to combine until the Sugar is dissolved.
Then whisk in the Milk until completely combined.
In a seperate bowl weigh out the Flour and Baking Powder then add to the wet ingredients and whisk until just smooth.
Heat 1.5 inches of flavpurless Oil in a frying pan.
Whilst it is heating set up a large plate with paper towels to drain of excess oil. and bring the cinnamon sugar close.
Check it's hot (you can test by gently dropping a little batter in and if it puffs and bubbles its ready)
Once the oil is ready take your triangles of bread two at a time and dunk in the batter.
Then once completely covered lay in the hot oil and watch it puff up and turn golden.
After a couple of minutes turn gently and fry the second side.
Once cooked, puffed and golden drain on the paper towel and then toss in the cinnamon sugar whilst still hot.
Repeat with the remaining bread, you can keep them warm in a low oven but these take no time at all to cook so they will not be cold if you don't.
Serve and enjoy.
Leftovers Tip
This would make the most epic bread pudding tear up the french toast and cover in custard then cook until set. Or you can freeze it and then enjoy Puffed French Toast whenever you want.
